Brush Technology are producing an updated range of aftermarket municipal brushes. These one-piece belly brushes are designed to work on all modern
municipal truck-mounted sweepers such as Scarab, and Johnston trucks. Prior to the introduction of these one-piece brushes (also commonly known in the trade as ‘belly’ or ‘wide sweep cylinder brushes’) they consisted of a re-usable steel cylinder shaft wrapped in segmented wafer rings of bristles. Every time the brush needed changing, the old wafer rings had to be removed, and the new ones
reassembled with suitable spacers onto the old shaft.

Comparatively the one-piece belly brush is very simple as it only requires the old brush to be removed and the new one attached. This fast change brush saves up to 45 minutes in fitting time!

The benefits of this brush range are immediate. Used street cleaning brushes are always dirty, and may have hazardous debris trapped in; the one piece brush removes the operators need to be in contact with this dirt, and saves them time to boot.

Although the one piece cylinder brushes are more expensive to produce than the old wafer segment brush, Brush Tec™ has invested heavily in both tooling and robotic assembly to drive down the cost of manufacturing. Extra-long life bristles help increase the brush performance and extend the sweeping life which can be over double the working hours of the traditional wafer ring brush. Two versions for each machine are available, a standard heavy duty and the two colour extra heavy duty ‘Blue Zebra™’, this is designed to be used by road plaining contractors to move large volumes of road planings.

This range is produced at Brush Tec’s Newcastle facility, using a post-consumer recycled polypropylene core/tube.

A must see for anyone in the Road Sweeping Business. Almost every kind of waste recycling machinery was there.

On the road sweeping side there were the heavyweights, Scarab, Johnston, Dawson Rentals to name but a few along with up and coming manufacturers with very smart looking road sweeping machinery.

The mini road sweepers were also in abundance showing off their capabilities and technology.

In fact even one company bought a brand new Johnston sweeper while we were standing there!

Apart from the road sweeping exhibits, there were machines that recycled and compressed all sorts of materials from plastics to glass and even timber.

We saw a timber cutting machine that was so big, it looked as though it could take a whole Oak Tree and spit it out no problem – not a machine to get your tie caught in when walking past!

Visiting these kind of events is always intuitive and keeps us up to speed with what’s going on out there and events at the NEC connected to the road sweeping industry are well worth attending.

Until next time…

We were very pleased to meet with FM Conway, City of London, TFL and Johnston Sweepers.

The views from the pier were fantastic with Tower Bridge as a backdrop and plenty of Road Sweeper machines on a barge.

We escaped the rain and had plenty of food and drink in the bar on a great boat moored at the venue. The conversations were all about road sweeping needless to say!

The sweepers on show were the Compact range including a VT651 kitted out with the latest technolgy in road sweeping. If you’re a road sweeper fan, this was very interesting to see how things have moved on since the early days of road sweeping.

We look forward to attending more of these type of events in the future!
